How to Easily Improve Windows Vista performance with Windows Ready Boost

Device setup
Device setup
We strongly advise you to try the new ReadyBoost performance feature of Windows Vista. Great desktop performance improvements can be achieved on systems that have less than 1GB of RAM. All you need to do is plug-in a fast USB-2 flash memory device that Windows Vista will use for temporary storage. The operating system is able to take advantage of the fast memory device which typically offers 10x performance improvements over hard drives. Applications can run to 50% faster when ReadyBoost is activated. The device acts as first level cache and information not found on the key will be searched on the hard drive. ReadyBoost is part of the Windows Performance Accelerators initiatives, that also include Windows Superfetch (a memory management strategy included in all Vista editions) and Windows ReadyDrive (for Hybrid Hard Drisk drive using an integrated NVRAM cache).

The reserved space is exclusively dedicated to the system and not available for ordinary files storage. You can either activate the feature in the Autoplay window that pops up when you plug-in the USB-2 Storage device; or do it manually by modifying the properties of an already mounted removable media. You will have the ability to adjust the space reserved for the system on the removable media, before or after the intallation.

Note that Windows Vista compresses the data stored on the media which effectively boost the capacity of your device. The system will test the speed of the device before any ReadyBoost activation. The primary reason is that some devices do not offer sufficient performances to improve the overall system experience. The minimum requirements are USB 2.0, 2.5 MB/sec for 4K random read accesses, 1.75MB/sec for random write accesses, and at least 256MB of free space. ReadyBoost can use up to 4GB of memory (FAT32 limitation).

Microsoft has addressed privacy concerns by encrypting the data with a AES-128 algorithm (see Advanced Encryption Standard on Wikipedia). The ReadyBoost feature currently works with one drive only but Microsoft indicated that they might enhance the support to multiple drives in the future.

Several hardware manufacturers such as Intel and Samsung already indicated they would build hardware devices specifically designed for Windows ReadyBoost.

Windows Vista is almost there - the Release Candidate 2 has just been delivered by Microsoft. A lot of articles argue about the respective merits of Apple Os X and Linux versus Windows Vista. Many people mentionned that Windows Vista is a high resource consumer (yes, you will need a recent computer to let it run smoothly) and is sometimes quite slow compared to Linux with XGL (also true).

Well, all these discussions are, at best, entertaining... Like it or not, everything will have this familiar feeling of 'deja vu'. The truth is that Windows Vista will dominate the Operating Systems market as of 2007. We predict that next year will be extremely tough for Apple - both on the home and enterprise desktops. If they have any competitive advantage, they will dim in the shadow of the dominant player which is Microsoft. Windows Vista comes with a plethor of innovation and the new operating system will be a landmark in the history of the computer industry. Microsoft has not invented anything but has no equal to bring the technologies to the masses. Microsoft is extremely pragmatic and is able to package a desktop with no equivalent. We will continue to bring you more information before, and after the official launch of Windows Vista. Stay tuned!
